Death Certificate

Every single song on Ice Cube’s 1992 album Death Certificate is critical. Cube predicted the LA riots and the further demise of Ruthless Records on this record. He got everyone REALLY riled up on this joint (he was banned from record stores all over the place. Politicians like C. Delores Tucker were literally steam rolling this and several other rap records at the time). No one was safe from Cube’s wrath - politicians, white people at large, other members of the Black community, the justice system, EVERYONE. He was highly pissed off and on a mission.

To me, it’s amazing how much I loved (still love) this record as a young kid growing up way out in suburban Southeastern Massachusetts. I literally could not relate to a single thing being rapped about on this record, yet I perfectly understood where Cube was coming from and it was mind blowing. I felt every track on this album. The work is undeniable.

The production on Death Certificate - handled by Sir Jinx and Boogieman - is also amazing. I put the beats on this record up against any Dr. Dre produced album.

I could write you a 30 page song by song dissertation on this album, but I’ll save that for the next time we’re together for beers. If you haven’t had the chance to listen to this album do yourself a favor and get it asap.
