Record of the Day: Elvis Costello + Burt Bacharach- “Painted From Memory”

My good friend David got me into this record. I can’t believe it dropped 14 years ago. Time she flies.

Truth be told, I’m not much of an Elvis Costello fan. I don’t exactly dislike his stuff, it just doesn’t stick. I am however, into Burt Bacharach. Burt co-wrote some of the best pop tunes in the 1960s. Classic stuff. I’ll list some of his hits below. While “Elvis” is know for writing both music and lyrics, Burt is generally more of a music(sans lyrics) man and tended to work with lyricists/producers back in the day. “Painted From Memory” is a soft and pleasant record. Good for relaxing times. Suntory time, perhaps?

A few of Burt Bacharach hits:
“Walk On Bye” as performed by Dion Warwick
“Please Stay” as performed by the Drifters
“Baby It’s You” as performed by the Shirells
“I Say a Little Prayer” as performed by Aretha Franklyn

Further proof that Bacharach is THEE man:
1) Burt had Dr. Dre compose drum patterns for his record “At This Time”. No joke.
2) Rocksteady/Reggae singer Slim Smith does a MEAN cover of “Please Stay”.
3) Slick Rick sings a bit of “Walk On Bye” on his song “Mona Lisa”.

Released 1998 via Mercury Records.
