Record Of The Day: the Connection- “New England’s Newest Hitmakers”

Sure, the Connection are HEAVILY influenced by 60s pop. And yes, they dress up all-fancy-like for shows and photo sessions. Trick is… they are definitely a Ramones-style punk band. Don’t be fooled. “New England’s Newest Hitmakers” was originally self-released as a CDR but Japanese label, S.P. Records picked it up and decided to put it on wax! I, for one, am very excited that this has happened!

The Connection are playing with the Cry and the Kurt Baker Band at Great Scott(Allston Village) next Wednesday(6th). Come hang out and watch them dedicate a song to me.

FUN FACT: I was part of an early incarnation of what ended up being the Connection. This was before Geoff was involved. It was Brad, Andy and myself. We mainly played Ramones covers while trying to get our act together… we never did get our act together.

Record Of The Day: the Tough Shits- “Self Titled LP”

I had the privilege of opening for these knuckleheads last month. Big Ups to Thirsty and Miserable for putting that together! Great show and great times!

My appreciation for this LP has been rapidly growing since my first spin. I’ve been likening the Tough Shits to mid/late-era Dead Milkmen… They don’t take themselves too seriously, they blend fun lyrics with bouncy bass fills AND they are from Philadelphia. Right? Right. Also, tracks like the organ-driven “She’s A Loner” tell us that our buddies have a bit of a soul beneath their Stooges shirt. I say… treat your turntable to this tasty treat! SOO good!

Released 2011 via Burger Recordings

Saw this posted up over at JTTS and needed some show some love. Two of my favorite contemporaries on one track. I was wondering when a TDE/Bruiser Brigade collab would finally happen. Dope video.

While I’m here, I need to send a big THANK YOU to everyone who came out Friday night to our first party ever at 321 Gallery in Somerville. Major shout outs to the White Pages, Immigrants (Shakir you are crazy), Porn Theatre Ushers, Yukonn MC, my sister and cousin for holding down our table, our friends who ran the door, everyone I got to chat with, everyone who bought some new gear, everyone who came out and partied and of course our beer sponsor Pabst Blue Ribbon.

If you bought some La Parca gear take a shot and send it to me at este@laparca.com so you can get blog famous!

Record Of The Day: the Iguanas- “Mona” / “Don’t Know Why” 45

Ever heard of Iggy Pop? Yeah, exactly, that guy that played Nona’s father on the Adventures of Pete & Pete. OK… enough with that. Iggy is well known as the godfather of punk rock but before he was “Iggy”, the front man for the Stooges, he was James Osterberg, the drummer for the blues/garage band, the Iguanas. Were talking early 60s here. This 45 is Iggy’s first appearance on record. Pretty cool.

FUN FACT: James was actually nicknamed “Iggy” by his boss at a record shop. Iggy is short for iguana. Get it?

Released 1964 via Forte Recordings

Adventures of Pete & Pete-style Iggy:

Looney Tunes Records

I knew that Looney Tunes was supposedly moving (to Allston Village?) so I can’t say that I was shocked to see an empty/dusty shop when walking down Boylston Street. If anything, my thoughts on the matter hover between neutrality and stern disinterest.

All I know for certain is that record shops have been steadily going out of business for about a decade now. The Metro Boston record mecca of yesteryear is nothing more than a memory at this point. I never thought I’d say this but… I’m starting to feel nostalgia for the 90s.

Shops that are actually still in business (as far as I know):

Planet Records, Harvard Sq, Cambridge
Armageddon Shop, Harvard Sq, Cambridge
Cheapo Records, Central Sq, Cambridge
In Your Ear Records, BU, Boston
In Your Ear Records, Harvard Sq, Cambridge
Nuggets, Kenmore Sq, Boston
Orpheus, South End, Boston
Skippy Whites, Egleston Square, Roxbury
Somerville Grooves, Union Sq, Somerville
Stereo Jacks, North Cambridge
Underground Hip Hop, South End, Boston
Weirdo Records, Central Sq, Cambridge
